The New York BBB Charity Accountability Program (NYPAS) promotes public confidence in local charities and encourages charitable giving. The program provides the public with information on specific charities and effective giving practices. NYPAS also informs nonprofit leaders about how to meet and maintain high accountability standards.
Each year, the NY BBB Charity Accountability Program reviews hundreds of financial statements, tax filings, annual reports and solicitations. Based on this information, provided voluntarily by the charity, a report is produced which includes a determination on whether the charity meets the Better Business Bureau's Standards for Charity Accountability along with a summary of the charity's mission, activities, governance and key financial information. There is no cost to be evaluated for a BBB Charity Report. Completed reports are valid for two years and posted online at Give.org. The Give.org website is BBB's charity information hub, which contains thousands of BBB Charity Reports about publicly soliciting nonprofits in communities across the nation.
Charities that meet all BBB Standards upon evaluation are automatically considered BBB Accredited at no cost. Only BBB Accredited Charities are eligible to participate in the optional BBB Accredited Charity Seal program, which offers access to the valuable BBB Seal, with a licensing agreement and modest sliding scale fee based on the charity's level of fundraising income.
Publicly soliciting charities from the Metro New York area are invited to participate in the BBB Charity Report program. For more details about initiating a BBB Charity Report, visit: newyork.bbb.org/participate. To begin the report process now, contact us at charity[at]newyork.bbb.org or call (212) 358-2873.
If you are a potential donor and have not been able to find the charity you are interested in on our website, please feel free to contact us with your request, so we may consider inviting the charity to participate in this program.
